What is Sustainability
Rainforest Alliance Certified
Rainforest Alliance Certified

With over 100 years of experience producing tea, we’ve found that the better we care for the land on our plantations and the people who work there, the better the tea in your glass. That’s great news for you and the planet.

Recently, in recognition of our commitment to sustainability, several of our tea estates, including our Kericho, Kenya plantation, have earned Rainforest Alliance certification. This certification is available exclusively to farms that meet or exceed the rigorous standards for sustainability that are necessary to achieve Rainforest Alliance certification. We are very proud to source our tea leaves from these farms and to be able to use the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal on Lipton® PureLeaf™.

As the producer of PureLeaf, the purest tea you can find, we are committed to sourcing all our tea sustainably. At present, at least 50% of the tea leaves in every Lipton® PureLeaf™ tea come from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms. Our goal is for all our tea suppliers to be Rainforest Alliance Certified™ by 2015.

Rainforest Alliance Certified The Rainforest Alliance

The Rainforest Alliance is an independent, international non-profit organization working to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods around the globe. Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms meet standards for sustainable farming that protect the environment and the rights and welfare of workers, their families and communities. A product can only carry the seal when those standards have been met and are strictly maintained.

They base their work in sustainable agriculture on three overarching, integrated pillars:

  • Environment – Protect the Land and Conserve Biodiversity
  • Economy – Ensure Sustainable Farms and Livelihoods
  • Ethics – Care for the Local Community

The Rainforest Alliance Certified™ standards are based on ten principles of sustainable agriculture:

  • Social and Environmental Management
  • Ecosystem Conservation
  • Wildlife Protection
  • Water Conservation
  • Workers’ rights and well-being
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Community relations
  • Integrated crop management
  • Soil management and conservation
  • Integrated waste management
